The Executive Job Search Reimagined What Still Works and What’s Changed

Let’s be honest, executive job searches have never been simple. But in 2025, they’re a whole new beast. The fundamentals I’ve coached and talked about for years still hold true: strategic intent, personal branding, and meaningful networking. What’s changed is the speed of disruption and the visibility of your reputation. If you’re stepping into the market, here’s how to show up with clarity, confidence, and impact.

Market Realities: Demand Is High, But So Are Expectations

Yes, companies are hiring. Healthcare, tech, financial services, and manufacturing are still strongholds. But they’re not just looking for experience. They want leaders who can drive transformation, navigate AI disruption, and foster sustainable growth. If you’ve led change, built inclusive teams, or championed ESG initiatives, now’s the time to spotlight it.

The Hidden Job Market Is Still King

Most executive roles are filled before they ever hit a job board. I know, I know, that’s nothing new, but the language is. Since around 2023, “Quiet hiring” became the buzz word, but the strategy is the same: be visible, be valuable, and be remembered. Or as my recruiting partners say “stay on their radar.” Also, reignite relationships.

Reach out with purpose. Informational interviews and thoughtful outreach often outperform recruiter submissions.

Your Online Brand Is Your First Impression

Before anyone calls you, they Google you. Your LinkedIn profile, thought leadership, and digital footprint are filters. They speak louder than a résumé. For those of you who say you don’t get on LinkedIn much, you might be happy to know, they make it easy for you now. Notifications, news, groups, scripts, and auto text suggestions make it easy for you to just pop in and out every so often. If nothing else, keep your profile updated. Now, if you care about personal branding, make sure your messaging is unified across platforms. Share insights. Show your executive value. And don’t underestimate the power of a well-crafted headline or About section.

Résumé Strategy: Tailor, Don’t Template

Generic won’t cut it and recruiters know when you use AI. Your résumé should draw a straight line between your impact and the organization’s needs. Highlight change leadership and measurable outcomes. Make sure you can speak to what's on your resume. You should be able to answer: “Why you, and why now?” I once read in one of my recruiter books “Think of me when…”

Your Network Is Your Power

Your next opportunity may never be posted. Stay visible online and present offline. Reconnect with peers, mentors, and decision-makers not only through LinkedIn or other social media outlets, but your industry and local Chamber of Commerce events (I talk more about this in the book Let Me Get My Coffee! Then We'll Talk Business). I have met several industry peers from Zoom meetings and even more through after-hours chamber, university and corporate events. Thoughtful outreach and genuine conversations often open doors that résumés can’t.

Mindset Matters

Executive searches take time. They require resilience, reflection, and recalibration. Celebrate small wins, such as when your 30-60-90-day plan captures the hiring panel’s attention. Reframe setbacks, for example, when you’ve gone through six rounds of interviews all to no avail. And lean into community: mentors, peers, even former colleagues. The right role isn’t just about title or salary; it’s about alignment with your strengths, values, and reputation.
