Insights for Executives, Creatives, and Career Changers

I recently tuned in to an NPR Planet Money segment where guests shared their fears about the future of work. One was debating law school, but worried about debt and AI disruption. Another was considering a shift to trade skills like plumbing or nail tech. Their concerns echoed what I hear from clients every day: “Is my job safe from AI?”
Here’s what the experts say and what I’ve seen firsthand:
Jobs that require trust, taste, or touch are the most AI-resistant Electricians, therapists, teachers, and yes writers. These roles demand physical dexterity, emotional intelligence, and nuanced judgment that machines can’t replicate.
Creative and strategic roles are holding strong AI can assist with drafting and research, but it can’t replace the human voice; especially when it’s rooted in storytelling, legacy, and lived experience. That’s why I’m confident in the future of my nonfiction brand Wendy Steele, and also in my fiction brand Stormy Steele, a nickname and pen name which has been my author identity since 2002. My fiction readers know the voice, and new ones will soon discover it when my next book launches.
The future isn’t about avoiding AI it’s about partnering with it Whether you’re a career coach, a novelist, or a tradesperson, the key is to lean into what makes your work irreplaceably human. As the Planet Money host said, it may end up “augmenting you, but not replacing you."
So if you’re contemplating a career pivot, don’t just ask “Is this job safe?” Ask: Does it require empathy, creativity, or real-world judgment? If yes, you’re not just safe you’re vital.
Career Tip: Future-Proof Your Role Whether you're in IT, law enforcement, healthcare, or finance, the key to staying relevant is to humanize your impact. Highlight your judgment, leadership, and strategic thinking; not just your technical skills. AI can crunch numbers, but it can’t replace your ability to connect, decide, and lead.
AI Resilience by Industry. You are safe in:
★ Information Technology: If you lead strategy, architecture, or human-AI integration
★ Law & Law Enforcement: Due to client-facing, investigative, or ethical decision-making roles
★ Healthcare: Managing in-patient care, diagnostics, and leadership
★ Finance & Accounting: For advisory, compliance, and forensic roles
★ Government & Defense: Due to policy, planning, and human oversight
★ Sales & Marketing: Humans are best for brand strategy, storytelling, and client engagement
★ Human Resources: Safe in leadership, talent strategy, and organizational development, especially roles that require empathy, conflict resolution, and culture-building.
Bottom line: If your role involves trust, judgment, or creativity it’s not just safe, it’s essential.
